Shambhala
In the heart of the Himalya, Pema marries Tashi and his two younger brothers Karma and Dawa. Soon after the marriage ceremony, Tashi goes on a trade trip to capital Lhasa, while Karma too leaves the family. She now lives alone with rascal Dawa in the village, a boy who never does his homework and so he gets tutoring from teacher Ram Sir, who is head over heels in love with Pema. Naturally, this leads to gossip in the village, especially when Pema turns out to be pregnant. Not much later, she hears that Tashi has disappeared somewhere along the trade route, upon which she resolutely gets on her horse Namkha to search for her husband, if only to prove her love and purity. The search for her husband gradually turns into a spiritual quest where, thanks to self-knowledge, she comes closer and closer to self-liberation.
This film, with mainly non-professional actors, was shot at an altitude of 4,000 to 6,000 metres in the dazzlingly beautiful Himalayan landscape. It is an intimate portrait of life in the high and steep mountains.
