Yi yi
Along with directors Hou Hsiao-hsien and Tsai Ming-liang, Edward Yang is considered one of the most important representatives of the Taiwanese New Wave, a group of filmmakers who have been making films that are closer to everyday reality since the 1980s. In the warm, layered and award-winning drama Yi yi, Yang proves that he deserved that status.
The Jian family, a middle-class family from Taipei, has four members, each with their own story. Father N.J., an engineer, is dissatisfied with his job. Mother Min-Min struggles with the condition of her mother, who is in a coma after a stroke. Teenage daughter Ting-Ting is plagued by feelings of guilt towards her grandmother and also ends up in a complicated relationship with the ex-boyfriend of her neighbour and friend Lili. Eight-year-old son Yang-Yang, who also doesn't know how to deal with his sick grandmother, is bullied at school. The story begins with a wedding, where N.J. meets his old childhood sweetheart Sherry.
