Nawi

The future looks very bright for 13-year-old Nawi, a very eager to learn girl from Turkana, a region in northern Kenya. She passed her secondary school entrance exam with flying colours. Her teacher and friends are very proud of her, and she is even interviewed by a television news crew. However, her father has very different plans for her. He wants to marry her off to a much older man, even though this is officially prohibited in Kenya, so that he can receive a generous dowry: 60 sheep, eight camels and 100 goats. When Nawi discovers that her father has sold her for “a herd of goats”, she makes a remarkable decision: she runs away.

This sympathetic, now multi-award-winning film, based on a story by Milcah Cherotich, is both an indictment of outdated traditions and patriarchy and a plea for girls' right to self-determination and education. Starring Michelle Lemuya Ikeny in her debut role.
